Tubal ligation, also known as tubal sterilization or getting your tubes tied, is a surgical procedure that permanently blocks or seals the fallopian tubes. The fallopian tubes are the pathways through which the eggs travel from the ovaries to the uterus. By blocking or sealing these tubes, tubal ligation prevents the sperm from reaching the eggs, thus preventing pregnancy.
