A Cook County judge arrested this week on allegations of domestic battery has been placed on restricted duties, the chief judge’s office announced Thursday.

Sixth Municipal District Judge Carl Boyd was put on “restricted duties or duties other than judicial duties in the office of the First Municipal District Presiding Judge E. Kenneth Wright Jr.,” according to a statement from Chief Judge Timothy Evans.

The action was taken to "promote public confidence in the integrity and impartiality of the judiciary and is effective immediately,” Evans said in a statement. The matter has been referred to the Judicial Inquiry Board, he added.

According to Chicago police, Boyd was arrested Tuesday night following an incident at his home in the 10700 block of South Seeley Avenue. Police said a 57-year-old woman suffered a “large laceration” to the left side of her face after Boyd allegedly threw a bottle at a glass door window, causing the window to break.

Boyd has since been charged with a misdemeanor count of domestic battery causing bodily harm.

Evans said he has asked the Illinois Supreme Court to assign a judge from outside of Cook County to hear Boyd’s criminal case in order to “avoid even the appearance of impropriety.”
