Students With Disabilities Grapple With Lingering Effects Of COVID-19 Pandemic-April 2024
Apr 22, 2025 8:35 PM

During the pandemic, students with disabilities faced unique challenges, especially during periods of remote learning.

Recently, the National Assessment of Educational Progress — also known as the nation’s report card — found that the pandemic erased decades of academic progress.

Jane Vaughan, a freelancer with Chalkbeat Chicago, recently wrote a story examining how students with disabilities in particular were affected by the pandemic.

While many students fell behind academically during COVID, Vaughan found that students with disabilities saw that regression amplified. Further, staffing shortages and a lack of planning have made attempts to reverse those declines even more difficult, according to Vaughan.
