The Pushkin Industries strike threat is no longer.
The Revisionist History and Happiness Lab podcast production company reached a deal on March 4 with its Writers Guild of America East union, which was subsequently ratified by members. According to the WGA East, which announced the agreement on Friday, the 12-member bargaining unit of producers, editors and engineers unanimously greenlit the companys first union contract.
Were proud of this contract, and we think it reflects the strength of the community weve built at Pushkin and is an essential part of the movement to build better standards across the industry, the Pushkin bargaining unit said in a statement. Were grateful to leadership for working with us throughout this process and for investing in our future together. In late February, the union floated a potential strike in a bid to improve terms on IP and wages compared with those that had previously been bandied about at the bargaining table. We will not accept any CBA without these guarantees, the bargaining unit wrote in a letter to management at the time.
The bargaining unit evidently accepted a salary floor of $73,000, with six percent raises in the first year of the deal and three percent in the two years following terms of the deal that the WGA East announced on Friday. On IP, the two sides negotiated a guarantee that workers who write, research and host their own shows get to negotiate those terms.
The three-year pact also offers a three percent 401(k) match and terms on artificial intelligence, requiring the company to consent to use a union members voice or likeness and allowing workers to decline a byline on work generated or edited by AI. The deal provides 16 weeks of paid parental leave, a minimum of 12 weeks of severance and just cause requirements for union member discipline and cuts.
Pushkin Industries, co-founded in 2018 by Malcolm Gladwell and Jacob Weisberg, has become a notable name in podcasting, producing titles like Against the Rules with Michael Lewis, Risky Business and Deep Cover. Pushkin has also produced audiobooks, including So Many Steves: Afternoons with Steve MartinandFiasco: The Battle for Boston.
The company and the union began negotiating their first contract about a year ago, following management voluntarily recognizing the union in fall 2023.
In a statement, Pushkin CEO Gretta Cohn said she was delighted to make a deal with the union. Were excited about the future at Pushkin and grateful that were moving forward united, towards the same shared goals, she said.
