NBC News is developing a new subscription streaming service, one that will be geared toward mobile video consumers.
Cesar Cond, the chairman of NBCUniversal News Group, announced the service at a summit hosted by Semafor in Washington Thursday.
Details are scarce, but Cond said that the company is targeting a fourth quarter launch, and thatit would complement the companys other streaming offerings, which include NBC News Now andToday All Day.
NBC News joins CNN in developing a subscription video offering that targets younger consumers. In January, CNN chief Mark Thompson revealed plans to launch a new streaming service, saying in a memo that it would be a new way for digital subscribers at home and abroad to stream news programming from us on any device they choose.
As consumers, particularly young consumers, turn to platforms like TikTok and YouTube, TV news outlets are seeking to gain ground in that world.
Cond framed NBC News as one of the largest purveyors of premium video content, and that the service it is developing would lean into that content, though he did reveal any more specifics.
More to come.
