An altercation over leftovers following Thanksgiving dinner escalated into the fatal stabbing of a 52-year-old man early Friday morning in the Chicago Lawn neighborhood.
James Dixon, 29, has been charged with one count of first-degree murder after he allegedly stabbed a man nine times in the head and body at a gathering in the 6800 block of South Talman Avenue.
According to Cook County prosecutors, Dixon had consumed a significant amount of alcohol throughout the day, and at around 3:15 a.m. Friday, after the party ended, he began digging with his hands into the leftover food.
This upset the party’s host, and her boyfriend, 52-year-old Vincell Jackson, forcefully escorted Dixon to the door, prosecutors said.

At this point a fight began between the men after Dixon allegedly sucker punched Jackson in the face. The fight moved outside onto the front porch of the home and witnesses inside heard Jackson ask Dixon, “What are you reaching for?”
The fight continued and at one point, Jackson was on top of Dixon and called out to a witness to call 911. That person went inside to make the call and when they came back outside, they saw Dixon running away while Jackson was “keeled over on a banister covered in blood,” according to prosecutors.
Jackson was taken to Holy Cross Hospital where he was pronounced dead. His cause of death was listed as multiple stab and incised wounds, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner.
Dixon was arrested at around 11:15 a.m. Friday morning. Multiple knives were recovered by police including one covered in blood, according to prosecutors.
Dixon allegedly admitted to fighting with Jackson, but claimed Jackson stabbed him first. While Dixon did have a small laceration on his hand, prosecutors said this did not require medical attention and instead appeared consistent with a knife slipping from his own hand while he was stabbing Jackson.
Records indicate Dixon is being held at the Cook County Jail on $350,000 bond. He is due back in court Thursday.
