John Malone Inks Memoir Deal With Simon & Schuster-April 2024
Apr 29, 2025 11:59 AM

John Malone, the architect behind some of the most consequential media deals of the past several decades, is ready to go public with his own take on the entertainment and tech landscape.

The mogul, whose moniker Cable Cowboy nods to his roots running Tele-Communications Inc., has signed a deal with Simon Schuster for a new memoir titled Born to Be Wired. Malone reteamed with Mark Robichaux, the author of 2003s biography Cable Cowboy, to edit the tome, which is set for release on Sept. 2.

Over a lifetime of business deals, the most valuable currency has been relationships, stated Malone of the new memoir. This book is about the people who changed my thinking, the hard-won lessons that nearly broke me, and strategies that helped me navigate chaos and carve my own path to success. Malone, whose net worth is $9.83 billion per Bloomberg Billionaires Indexs latest tally, controls Liberty Media, a far-flung empire that includes SiriusXM, the Formula One racing circuit, MLBs Atlanta Braves and a stake in Live Nation Entertainment.

The Born to Be Wild logline promises, an insider account of launching cables first networks, including Discovery, QVC, TBS, and Black Entertainment Television, and reveals his strategic thinking behind the largest media mergers of our time, such as Warner Bros. Discovery, and the global concert firm Live Nation Entertainment (Ticketmaster). The book will also include anecdotes on Rupert Murdoch, Ted Turner, Barry Diller, Reed Hastings and Mark Zuckerberg, among other moguls.

Early word about Malones latest book spread in 2024, when Liberty exec Greg Maffei told an investors conference that hes been working on that for at least three years. I remember getting interviewed for it a while ago.

The mogul, who has a seat as an independent director at Warner Bros. Discovery, is one of the largest land-owners in the United States. His tome also will delve into history, as the logline states: He recounts the remarkable story of how America was wired, and how a simple strand of copper, initially used for rural TV-antenna service, evolved into a platform for streaming TV, broadband Internet and phone service, paving the way for tech giants such as Amazon, Facebook, and Google.
