Disney is leaving the famed Fox Studio Lot amid plans to centralize production teams in Burbank.
Fox retained the 53-acre lot on Pico Boulevard in Century City as part of its $71.3 billion deal with Disney in 2019 for the bulk of assets owned by 21st Century Fox.It reached a seven-year leaseback with the entertainment giant to avoid disruption of productions shooting at the lot.
Over the past year, Disneys TV arm has been bringing Los Angeles-based teams together in Burbank, with the goal streamlining services, according to a person familiar with the situation. As part of this plan, Disney isnt renewing its lease with Fox. Teams based at the location are already relocating to workplaces in Burbank, where the company has its own studio lot, production services and office space. The company expects the move to be completed by the end of the year. The move comes as Fox pursues regulatory approval to build another nine new soundstages, production facilities and commercial office space to the lot. The plans were announced in 2023 amid a shortage of premium studio space in Los Angeles, though it now appears that deficit is easing as movies and TV shows increasingly shoot in other locations that give more subsidies to host Hollywood.
The FOX Lot is second to none in terms of location and premium production and post-production facilities available, said a company spokesperson in a statement.
The Fox lot, where classic movies like Miracle on 34th Street and Sound of Music were shot, has been one of the most active production facilities in the city over the past decade. ABCs Modern Family, Speechless and Fresh Off the Boat shot at the lot, as did Foxs The Orville, The Mick and L.A. to Vegas, along with most of Ryan Murphys FX shows, among others. Plans for Disney productions, including 9-1-1 and 9-1-1: Lone Star, that currently film at the space remain unknown.
There are more than 80 permanent buildings on Foxs lot, including soundstages, television production and programming facilities, executive offices and support facilities, that amount to nearly 1.8 million square feet of building space. Disney was the largest tenant at the location, which also houses Fox Sports, Fox Entertainment Group and a chunk of the corporate team, as well as some Tubi staff. The company has a separate facility in Los Angeles for Fox News.
The Los Angeles Times earlier reported Disney plans to vacate the lot.
