After the prosecution rested its case Tuesday, defense attorneys for three current and former Chicago police officers accused of conspiring to cover up the fatal shooting of Laquan McDonald are scheduled to begin presenting their own evidence Thursday morning.

Chicago Officer Thomas Gaffney, former officer Joseph Walsh and ex-Detective David March are each charged with conspiracy, official misconduct and obstruction of justice, accused of falsifying official reports from the scene of the 2014 shooting in order to “conceal the true facts” of McDonald’s death in an attempt to shield fellow Officer Jason Van Dyke from prosecution.

Special prosecutors called seven witnesses over four days of testimony before resting their case Tuesday evening. But it remains to be seen if defense attorneys for the men will call any witnesses of their own when the trial resumes Thursday.

Defense attorneys have already argued prosecutors failed to prove such a conspiracy exists and claim there’s no proof of any intent from the defendants to cover for Van Dyke.
