Create Music Group acquired the catalogs of electronic music producer deadmau5 and record label mau5trap in a deal valued at more than $55 million.
The deal includes the sound recordings and copyrights of more than 4,000 songs and will see the formation of a joint venture to release future recordings by deadmau5 and from mau5trap. Create Music Group will also re-master and re-release certain catalog pieces, explore licensing opportunities, brand partnerships and work with emerging media such as gaming, VR and live streaming. Joel Zimmerman, otherwise known as deadmau5, has built up an electronic music career across more than two decades to become one of the genres most celebrated artists. He founded the record label mau5trap in 2007 as part of a campaign for artist rights and ownership.
The record label has launched the careers of several popular dance music artists, including Skrillex, REZZ, Noisia, Feed Me and i_o.
When deadmau5 put on that helmet, he didnt just create a brandhe sparked a movement. His vision redefined electronic music, pushing boundaries and reshaping the industry. From the earliest days of Create Music Group, [co-founder and COO] Alexandre Williams and I had the privilege of working alongside Joel and his business partner Dean Wilson, witnessing firsthand the evolution of an icon, Jonathan Strauss, co-founder and CEO of Create Music Group, said.
Now, as the stewards of deadmau5 and mau5traps legendary catalog, we inherit a legacy that changed music forever. Joels influence reaches far beyond soundhis mastery bridges music, gaming, and technology, inspiring a new generation to think bigger. This is more than an acquisition; its a responsibility, he continued.
I have worked closely with Jonathan, Alex and Create for nearly two decades now, building my own career as well as the artists on mau5trap.We didnt need to look far when we were considering a partner to help get it all to the next level. With Create, I feel the music is going to reach more, Zimmerman said.
